If you’re planning travel, you’ll probably want to look into a travel insurance policy that covers coronavirus-related illness and cancellations. In the past, many insurers excluded COVID-related claims due to the virus’s status as a foreseen event/pandemic. But due to demand, some insurers are changing their policies regarding this. Here are some things to consider when purchasing a policy.

Determine What’s Covered

  • Trip Cancellation In case you need to cancel a trip prior to departure because you, a covered travel companion or possibly someone you need to care for contracted COVID-19.
  • Trip Delay If your trip is delayed due to changing COVID-related guidelines.
  • Travel Medical Coverage When you, or a covered travel companion, become ill with COVID-19 while traveling abroad and incur healthcare expenses or require an evacuation.

Discover What is Not Covered

  • Countries with Level 4 Travel Advisories Some insurers will not provide coverage if a Level 4 Do Not Travel advisory is issued by the U.S. Department of State for a specific country.
  • Cancelling Due to Fear of Getting Sick Canceling a trip because you’re afraid you’ll get sick does not qualify for coverage under your travel insurance policy. If you want ultimate flexibility to cancel a trip, no matter the reason, you’ll want to consider a CFAR (Cancel For Any Reason) policy upgrade. That way, you can get up to 75% of your nonrefundable deposit back as long as you cancel at least two days in advance.
  • COVID-Related Events Not Directly Related to You If you planned on going to, say, a conference or a family reunion that was canceled due to COVID-associated concerns, you will not be reimbursed for your nonrefundable flight or hotel accommodations.

When purchasing a policy, read it carefully. Because a lot of important information can be lurking in that little type.
