These foreign transaction fees are imposed by your credit card, and generally add 1-3% for each charge you make in another country. So for every $1,000 you spend, you could be paying $30 in foreign transaction fees.

The good news is there’s a way to avoid these fees. Simply travel with a credit card that doesn’t charge them. Discover and Capital One are two financial institutions that don’t charge foreign transaction fees for either debit or credit card purchases. Which is fortunate. Because there are plenty of things we want to spend money on when we travel. But fees aren’t one of them.
