Many people know that they need to handle their kitchen scraps in a different and more environmentally conscious way. But traditional composting isn’t accessible for everyone, particularly those who live in cities and apartments without outdoor space. This is where a miraculous new device — the Lomi countertop composter — comes into play. Lomi is a low-energy, easy-to-operate countertop composter that will transform the way you think about kitchen waste. When I got a Lomi last month, it opened my eyes to a better way of handling my kitchen waste — and I couldn’t be happier I made the change. Here is a rundown of the most important things I’ve learned from Lomi.
Why Compost?
With a single head of lettuce taking at least 25 years to decompose in a landfill — and emitting harmful methane gas all the while — being mindful about how we dispose of kitchen waste is essential. When kitchen scraps, yard waste and other plant material end up in a landfill, they decompose anaerobically, which means they don’t break down and turn into soil. Instead, they sit alongside other garbage, slowly rotting and emitting harmful gasses into the environment, leading to a whole host of hazardous conditions. Composting creates an environment where food scraps and other degradable items can break down into soil, which means they take up less space and can produce an end product that is beneficial to gardens and houseplants.
How Does Lomi Work?
When using Lomi, all kitchen scraps are placed into the device’s compost bucket. Depending on which cycle is selected, the user may opt to add a bit of water and a LomiPod, which helps the scraps break down faster. This step also adds beneficial bacteria and nutrients to the end product, making it ideal for houseplants and gardens.
You’ll want to make sure the unit is plugged in and the lid is properly locked in place before selecting the cycle you wish to run and letting Lomi do the rest. Lomi essentially speeds up the natural process of composting by adding heat and smart sensor-triggered aeration. In a matter of hours, your kitchen scraps will be turned into dirt that can be used in gardening or discarded with yard waste. Lomi also uses carbon filters to ensure there are no foul odors during its cycle.
The unit takes up less space than a microwave, is quieter than a dishwasher and can complete a full composting cycle in as little as four hours. Lomi is also able to break down bioplastics when set to the “Lomi Approved” mode. In fact, the plastics used to package Lomi for delivery can be placed right inside the unit and broken down in one cycle.
