There’s only one person who is going to be with you every second of your life, and that person is you. So why not make a real effort to being the most loving, generous “life partner” you can be? Whether you’re with someone or single this Valentine’s Day, here are a few tried and true tips for adding a dash of self-love to your life.

Make a List of Things That Make You Smile
What are the things in your life that make you feel good, loved and fulfilled? Make a list of them. This helps reinforce just how many positive things already exist in your life, and gives you a solid foundation to build upon. If it’s laughter-filled lunches with friends you enjoy, plan them. Rollerblading? Go for it. Does having fresh flowers in your home delight you? Then get yourself a delivery subscription already. Determine what makes you smile and double down.

Treat Your Body to What Makes It Feel Good
The old saying “Be good to your body, it’s where you live” couldn’t be more relevant when it comes to self-love. Being intentional about what you put into your body pays off in how your body feels. Eat nutrient-rich foods. Strengthen and revitalize your body by engaging in pleasurable exercise. Have a vanilla-bourbon massage or indulge in something equally decadent. Your body deserves to be honored and cared for.

Watch Your Words
Be careful what you say to yourself because you are always listening. Speak and think kind, loving things about yourself. Treat yourself with the same level of affection you would lavish on a much-loved friend and see how good it makes you feel.

Put Your Own Needs First
If you always put other people first, then you will always come last. Of course, you don’t want to disregard the feelings or needs of those you care about, but build an awareness of when you should look out for yourself in order to find the right balance.

Create Community
Surrounding yourself with people who care about and support you is essential. Build a community of people who inspire you, and distance yourself from those who drain you. Being around kind, caring people adds a tremendous amount of meaning to life, and is perhaps the most powerful way to practice self-love.
