Open the Curtains
Environmental cues play a huge role in our energy levels and help set our circadian rhythms. So open those curtains and raise those shades. You might even want to splurge on professional window cleaning.
Go Outside
Head into the great outdoors — even if it’s just a small patch of grass. Ten minutes outdoors, especially if your feet are bare and touching the earth, is enough to make you feel more alive.
Take a Power Nap
Indulge in a quick midday nap. Ten minutes is all you need to boost energy without throwing off your night’s sleep.
Drink Some Water
Even mild dehydration can cause sleepiness, so try chugging a glass or two whenever fatigue strikes. Or better yet, try and stay hydrated all day long.
Smell a Lemon
There’s a reason physicians at UCLA Health and many other hospitals now offer aromatherapy; it’s been proven to elevate energy levels. Lemon, in particular, boosts energy and mood, so slice one open and take a nice, big whiff.
Increase Your Magnesium Intake
Magnesium is needed for more than 300 biochemical reactions in the body, so when levels are even a little low, energy can drop. The recommended daily intake of magnesium is around 300 milligrams for women and 350 milligrams for men. To make sure you're getting enough, add a handful of almonds, hazelnuts or cashews to your daily diet, and eat more fish, especially halibut.
Walk Around the Block
Experiments at California State University, Long Beach, revealed that a brisk 10-minute walk not only increased energy levels, but that the effects lasted up to two hours. And when the daily 10-minute walks continued for three weeks, overall energy levels and mood were lifted.
Have a Latte
Pair a quick caffeine hit with the sustaining power of protein by having a low-fat latte instead of just a cup of coffee. All that milk turns your java into a protein drink, which provides not only extra energy, but extra calcium, which is good for your bones.
Make a Call
We are deeply social animals. That’s one reason a quick phone call to someone you care about can be an instant energy boost. Even a 10-minute chat can make you feel both grounded and energized.
Belt It Out
Singing aloud requires deep breathing. Sing a full song and you’ll have plenty of extra oxygen pumping through your system, making you feel energized. And perhaps a bit silly, which is a great energy booster itself.
